Located in the south east of Veliko Tarnovo, the old capital of Bulgaria and in the north east of Sofia, the new capital of Bulgaria, lies the sleepy mountain town of Elena. Founded in the 15th century, Elena has a lot of revolutionary and revival history that makes sure it remains inked on the pages of history. It is also renowned for the first teachers’ training school in all of Bulgaria, besides having the Museum of Revival and the Struggles for National Liberation and a clock tower of 1812, which still strikes a chord every hour!
The Kapinovski monastery is also located in Elena, which was destroyed when Bulgaria succumbed to the rule of the Ottomans. But was rebuilt in 1845 for the fifth and final time and it stands a mute witness to the ravages and events of those times.
