Sofia is the capital and largest city of all cities of Bulgaria, and has a population of 1,246,791 (making it the 15th largest city in the European Union). Located in western Bulgaria, at the foot of the gigantic Vitosha Mountains, Sofia is the administrative, cultural, and economic hub of Bulgaria. Sofia is also one of the oldest cities in Europe with a history dating back to 8 century BC. The remnants of its glorious and disturbing past can be seen along side the modern landmarks in the city.
The prime attractions in Sofia are the thermal springs, which are still open for public use. The other landmarks are the two Byzantine churches, a throwback to the old glory and power days, and its grand boulevards attract tourists steadily.
