Balchik

Balchik is a Black Sea coastal town located approximately 40 km north-east of Varna. Balchik started its life towards the end of the 6th C. B.C. as the ancient Greek colony. In classical antiquity it was the Greek colony of Krunoi and later Balchik became the Greek-Byzantine fortress called Dionysopolis. The Milesian colonists believed that the goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, was born here. Today quality golf courses are a big feature of Balchik, like the Gary Player PGA signature course development of off-pan villas and apartments winning the Bentley International Award for Best Bulgarian Golf Development 2005.

Balchik has a population of around 15,000. It is the 3rd largest Bulgarian port after Varna and Bourgas, used for medium-size passenger and trade vessels. Today, the Balchik Palace and the adjacent Balchik Botanical Garden are the town's most popular landmarks. The Balchik Botanical Garden is the biggest and most diverse in the Balkans and the town is attractive to tourists with its ancient atmosphere that has been preserved for centuries now. Balchik truly is a beautiful location, always worth a visit when in Bulgaria.
