Elena is a town in the Bulgarian central Stara Planina mountains, 40 Km southeast of Veliko Tarnovo. Elena lies within the Veliko Tarnovo Province and is a popular mountain resort also known for the fine local cuisine. The population of the town is around 7,000. Elena is an old settlement founded in the 15th century. In the 18th and 19th century Elena became well known as a centre of crafts, trade and education. Elena is a beautiful example of rural Bulgarian countryside.

There are several architectural ensembles preserved dating back to the Bulgarian National Revival period, including more than 100 old houses. Wall-to-wall construction forms interesting street silhouettes. The houses have stone basements with white-washed or wooden walls of the upper floor with protruding bays above. The local cuisine includes a dish called Elenski but, a traditional local cured ham, this is a popular delicacy throughout Bulgaria. Elena is a charming rural small town withing easy access of Veliko Tarnovo by car.

To the south-west of Elena is located the winter ski-resort of Pamporovo and Bansko, two of Bulgaria´s finest.
