Plovdiv

The spirit of the city of Plovdiv is very much linked to the creative power of its artists, writers and musicians. Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria, with a population of around 370,000 people. Plovdiv is the largest and most important city of the historical region of Thrace, famous for its ancient and diverse culture and millenary history. Lucian the Greek called Plovdiv "the biggest and most beautiful of all towns" in Thrace. Today Plovdiv is a most attractive and vibrant centre, with arguably more to boast than Sofia, the capital. The Plovdiv Drama Theatre was the first professional theatre group in Bulgaria founded in 1881. Plovdiv is a wealth of history and culture.

Plovdiv was conquered in 342 B.C. by Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great, who renamed it Philippoupolis. Plovdiv later became independent under the Greeks, until it was incorporated into the Roman Empire. South west of Plovdiv is the famous Pamporovo winter ski resort in the Rhodopes mountains, further to the west of this in Bansko ski resort in the Pirin Mountains. World class skiing on offer. A couple of major motor routes come through Plovdiv, like the road connecting Sofia with Istanbul through Edirne, and also the road connecting Sofia to Burgas through the Stara Zagora mountains. Plovdiv is regarded as the gate to the Rhodopes Mountains.
